A fair to remember

For her birthday, I gave my sister, Gina two tickets to tonight's KC and the Sunshine Band concert. Yikes.
Let's just say that's not the way I like it! Poor KC is so heavy and out of shape, it was truly painful to watch him (attempt to) perform!
Click on the photo of KC and see how profusely he was sweating...the entire time! He couldn't catch his breath and could not keep up with the dancers (who were close to naked, though were not nearly as attractive as that might sound!) Gina and I LOVED when KC sang his few very recognizable songs, and we sang and danced along...but the other 50 minutes of the one hour show was just plain awful to watch.
Poor Guy!! I kept thinking he was going to have a heart attack right there on the stage!
But, thanks to pre-show taquitos, beer, ice cream and a great photo booth session--all was not lost! We had a blast. And, I have a feeling KC's concert will be something that we talk--and laugh-- about for many years to come...Happy Birthday Gina!

Girls just wanna have fun...and breakfast!

This morning I was lucky enough to go to breakfast with two of my favorite girls...
Sweet little Jackie and her awesome mom, Laura! (Seriously, how cute are they?!)
...and OH what a breakfast it was! We met at the Original Pancake House...where everything is DELICIOUS...and HUGE!! Laura had the SIX-egg Western Omelette (don't worry, it came with pancakes on the side....)and I had the most fabulous thing on the menu--the Dutch Baby! Honestly, you just want to sing songs of JOY when the thing comes out...and WEEP when you taste it...it is absolutely magnificent!

So far, it's the only thing I have eaten today...
But that's not gonna last much longer...I'm on my way to the OC Fair and I'm on a mission to devour something spectacularly deep fried, dipped in chocolate or served on a stick!

DiLallo Burgers!

I know I have mentioned before that my maiden name is DiLallo and that my family owns a chain of restaurants in Montreal...DiLallo Burgers. Once or twice a year, we are blessed with a visit from one of THE DiLallos of burger fame...and they cook us up a spectacular feast!!
My cousin, Anthony DiLallo...working his magic at my parents' house!
The burgers are SERIOUSLY delicious...
it's the DiLallo Burger secret recipe!
(As long as I can remember, Anthony has called me "Jules Verne")My Oriole-loving nephew, Logan! And his Penguin-loving friend, Kevin! We each ate a couple of burgers with what I believe was three bottles of wine. Did I mention the banana creme and chocolate cream pies? Oh yeah!
And, to top it all off...FIFTEEN innings of Dodgers baseball.
Burgers and wine and pie...oh my! The night was so much fun.
The Dodgers, unfortunately, emerged the losers...

12 months later...

One year ago this week, I was in Kenya. When I first got back, I warned people that they had better have a few hours if they really wanted to know how my trip was...I could not stop talking about everything I'd seen, felt and experienced.
If you have never heard the stories, well, let me know when you have a little time, I still love to share it all. It was a life changer for me...in so many ways and those experiences still affect the way I think and make decisions a year later. Talk about perspective.
I think of these sweet people all the time. All the time.

Allison will be heading back there in September. I'm hoping to stuff a few essentials--school supplies and a dozen or so Dodgers tee shirts--into her suitcase for some of the kids at Oasis of hope.
If you are interested in knowing more about the beautiful people of Kitale, Kenya--check out Allison's blog at Kenyakenyakenya.blogspot.com

Dinner with the boys

As I was walking to the parking garage this afternoon--after a very busy, long Sunday at work--I was thinking I would treat myself to an order of Pad Thai from Pick up Stix.
I went to turn on the car, I noticed that it seemed to chug a little, but it started. Once on my way, I called Pick up Stix and was soon walking back to my car with dinner in hand. (I was honestly thinking, "I wonder if red or white goes with Pad Thai...")
Then, I went to start the car. Nothing. Dead. Dead! I knew it! Gratefully, there is a Mobil Station in the parking lot of Pick up Stix, and after several minutes of negotiations, one of the men working there assisted me with jumping my car.
Oh my dinner smelled good...as I headed straight to Pep Boys!
After a brief "battery check" and $124 on the debit card, I was asked to take a seat in the waiting area and informed that it would be about 30 minutes to install the new battery. And so I did.
But I was so hungry...I decided to sneak back out to my car and retrieve the Pad Thai. What the heck, I quickly ran next door to CVS and bought a Diet Coke with lime. It was dinner time!
I wish I had taken a photograph--
There I was--in my best navy blue suit, cream stockings and heels, sitting in the Pep Boys waiting area, watching "The best of Nascar"(or something of that genre) all the while holding the Diet Coke between my knees and eating my delicious Pad Thai!! (Thank goodness they had thrown the chop sticks in with the order.) I smiled big as I sucked in a big noodle (they had not, by the way, thrown in a napkin) and I thought how fun it was to be so thoroughly enjoying this meal in such ridiculous surroundings!
I was so excited to see that they had thrown a fortune cookie in the bag, and as I finished up the meal, I anxiously cracked open my cookie and read the fortune:

Your happiness is intertwined with your outlook on life.

And as I finished up my lovely dinner with Manny, Moe and Jack and headed out to my newly re-vitalized car...
I absolutely had to agree.

Well Red

A friend of mine has been frequenting a wine bar, using it as his afternoon 'office' throughout the workweek.
I always imagine him working away in the mellow and tranquil surroundings...kind of secretively...drinking in the peacefulness.
And the wine, of course.

I am a little envious.

Tonight after work, I poured myself a glass of wine and sipped it while in the mellow, tranquil--very secretive--peacefulness of my bathtub.
The envy quickly dissipates and my mind begins to wander to a dark little corner in a wine bar...

My wine du jour is WELL REaD
A Grenache/Sangiovese/Syrah blend that is absolutely delicious...
and has a damn cool name.

My Fair Ladies

Allison and Sunny and I made our annual trek to the Orange County Fair today!
Australian Potatoes, chocolate covered bananas, pumpkins, snakes, pigs, steer and OH so much more! Rumor has it, this is the last year...
so we made sure to make the most of it!
I may have to make one more trip to the fair before it's over--
I didn't get to have a funnel cake!

I'm the happiest girl in the whole USA

Oh what a night! With my friend Stephanie before the Dodgers-Reds game last night. It was a bit of a warm night initially, and the Dodgers were RED HOT producing TWELVE runs and a spectacular, eventful game!
My friend, Tim and his lovely wife, Julie met us there too!
Talk about the happiest place on Earth!
It was the absolute PERFECT night!!
...as we were leaving, we spotted Jon Lovitz, who stopped for a photo op with Stephanie!
"I love LA!"
Dodgers become the first team to reach 60 wins and now lead the National League West by NINE games. I am such a happy girl today!
Yeah, you're right...
everyday.

This is MY town!

The Orange County Version...

It's a beautiful day for a ballgame!

I am heading up to Dodger Stadium today for my 18th baseball game of the year--and for what I hope to be the Dodgers 60th win of the season!

It is almost impossible to describe the JOY I feel when I get to be at a Dodger Game. My heart beats before I even enter the parking lot...and it jumps out of my chest as I walk into the ballpark! Once I get to my seat--with a beer in one hand and a Dodger dog in the other--I never stop smiling!!
I watch batting practice as the crowd shuffles in and I swear, there is absolutely no other place on earth that I'd rather be!
It is a feeling that has yet to be surpassed.
My Dad introduced me to the Los Angeles Dodgers when I was just a kid, and I've been going to games at Dodger Stadium for as long as I can remember--literally all my life. The Dodgers won the World Series the year I was born as well as the year I graduated from high school...our connection seems to be destiny.
Someday, I will be a season ticket holder...or, better yet, work there!
Until then, I will take a little time to figure out which jersey to wear tonight, buy me some peanuts and crackerjack and then...take me out to the ballgame!
I don't care if I never get back...
And honestly, I really don't.

Sunny Delight!

My niece, Sunny is in town for just a few more days...
I met everyone for dinner at Red Robin tonight and brought Sunny a special gift!
We all had a chance to play Cat in the Hat!
(Don't tell me I'm not getting my money's worth out of that free hat they gave out at Petco Park!)
If it's a DiLallo gathering, there will be dessert...
Oh my and YES it was delicious!!!
Sunny with Papa and BumMy nephew, Logan and my sister, Gina and the other side of that glorious dessert!
Sunny will be returning to Hawaii on Friday...she actually starts 4th grade next week!
That gives us a enough time to do one more VERY important thing before she leaves:
Go to the Fair.

Take me out to ANY ballgame!!

This morning, while talking baseball with one of the guys at work, I was told that it was impossible for me to be a fan of both the Dodgers AND the Angels. This guy told me that I needed to choose one team.
Sorry, I just don't agree.
I am a life-long, avid fan of the game of baseball. I love EVERY team! I love everything about the GAME and can appreciate a night at the ballpark--no matter the team or the stadium! Of course I follow the Dodgers--passionately!--bu
t I ROOT ROOT ROOT for baseball and constantly encourage people to go out and take in a night at the park!
Enjoy the crack of the bat, the beauty of the field, the intricacies of play. Learn the infield fly rule! (I'll teach you!) Take in batting practice, drink in an ice cold beer, eat peanuts til you're covered in shells! Teach every child you know to sing TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALLGAME! And take them out to one!
Baseball is amazing and I hope to someday enjoy a game at every single stadium in the country! And, for the record, I have a Diamondbacks tee, a Padres hat, a Yankees jersey, several Angels shirts and a WHOLE LOT of Dodgers gear!
I will ROOT ROOT ROOT for the home team every time.

Especially the Angels.
Unless of course, they are playing the Dodgers...

Let me know if you'd like to go to a game!
Just a warning--I get there for BP and stay til the fat lady sings.
And, if you don't know what that means, please call me right away!
We gotta get you to a game.

Happily Ever After

Until about four years ago, I had never lived alone. When I was 18, I moved from my family's home--with four younger sisters--into my husband's home--with two room mates and two dogs. Oh, and we had a baby on the way! My entire life I relished time alone, but moments of solitude and silence were few and far between. Again--up until four years ago.
Now, my life is full of silence and lots of time to myself.
And I gotta tell ya, it ain't half bad...
So, as I sit here in my jammies at 5 in the afternoon, let me share with you a few of the things I have come to appreciate over the last several years of living alone.

THINGS I LOVE ABOUT BEING SINGLE & LIVING ALONE
1. I listen to music and sing in my house day and night. I put songs on repeat. And no one complains.
2. I come home from the gym and strip in the garage. I come up to the house naked, sometimes stopping at the fridge and taking gulps of juice straight from the carton.
3. I eat food directly from the containers.
4. I have washed my car exactly three times in three years.
(I love that.)
5. I eat in my car. And drink in my car. And leave stuff in my car.
(I really love that.)
6. My house is kinda messy. (Unless you're coming over.)
7. I never make my bed. (Unless you're coming over.)
8. I watch baseball or ESPN or the MLB channel, 24/7. (Reruns of the 1987 All Star game are better than anything on TV today.)
9. I buy whatever I want, whenever I want, where ever I want.
(And I throw away the receipts.)
10. I do laundry twice a month. Maybe.
And I live out of the basket for weeks.
11. I eat cereal for dinner. Or a couple of eggos.
Usually with a beer.
12. I take a nap every day.
13. I take a bath every day. (Usually with a beer.)
14. I go to the gym, to yoga or for a walk every day.
15. I read through a couple of books a week.
16. I sit on the couch with my laptop for hours every night.
And I sleep with my BlackBerry.
17. I go out with friends several times a week.
(Sometimes, friends visit me...)
18. I see my family a few times each month.
(Because I want to.)
19. I've been to SIXTEEN baseball games so far this season!
Going to another one on Tuesday.
20. Sometimes, I get up, read the paper and then go back to bed.
Often actually.
21. The dirty dishes are all mine.
22. I'm the only one who bitches when there's no milk for the coffee.
23. I am going to San Francisco next month mainly to see the Dodgers play the Giants. And because I can.
24. No one keeps track of where I am or when I'm coming home.
(Spur of the moment is a whole new world.)
25. It's a very simple, easy, quiet, uncomplicated, delightful and gratifying way to live.

Yes, I have dated over the last four years. And, for the most part, it's been a lot of fun. I am certainly open to being in a relationship, but definitely not obsessed with finding one.
Please know too, that I am not advocating that you become single.
I just want to share how fulfilling it is to love and appreciate the life you have, rather than to wish and long for a life that you don't have.
Let me tell you, there's a whole lot of good in this life.

So, until I find a man who just wants to sit on the couch and listen to music and watch baseball and drink beer...
well, I'll be living alone and loving it.

being able to pay cash
putting away the last load of laundry
a STRONG cup of coffee to accompany my 4am wake up call

Halo there!!

What tops a night at the ball game with a long time, amazing friend (who loves and represents the opposing team), a shared chocolate shake from Ruby's and an Angels 'come from behind' win??
Greg Brady singing the National Anthem...
Really, does life GET any better?

I finally hung it up today...I think it looks gorgeous!
Thank you Allison!

Weed my Palm

Since the day I moved into my home--three years ago--this palm tree has bothered me. First of all it's not pretty. Secondly, it's a major fire hazard. You know I am not a complainer, but it is the view from both my patio AND my bedroom! I have written email after email to the association to ask the owners to please have it trimmed. I have been diligent with this request-even attaching photos--once a month or so for three years. THREE years!
But today as I was waking up, I heard rustling outside my window. Sure enough, there were tree trimmers surrounding the palm! Within about 1/2 hour, the palm tree looked beautiful!!
Look at the difference it makes!
Truly, it not only opens up and improves the view from my home, it virtually eliminates the fear of the tree--and my house--going up in flames.
Simple pleasures, huh?
I am SO happy!

...and one more...

If you build it...

And it's just up the street from my house!
Yippee!

Note to self...

...and for you too.

Pageant of the Masters

Last night I was fortunate enough to attend Opening Night of the 2009 Pageant of the Masters at the Festival of Arts in Laguna Beach. Since 1939 it has been Laguna's most famous attraction and something that I have been blessed to be able to attend nearly every year since I was a teenager.
What is it?

Ninety minutes of "living pictures" - incredibly faithful art re-creations of classical and contemporary works with real people posing to look exactly like their counterparts in the original pieces. An outdoor amphitheater, professional orchestra, original score, live narration, intricate sets, sophisticated lighting, expert staff, and hundreds of dedicated volunteers have won recognition for the Pageant as the best presentation of its kind.

To me personally, it's a magnificent summer night with friends--accompanied by art, music, creativity, imagination, ingenuity, originality and amazing camaraderie.

And it takes my breath away every single time.

Saturday, in the park...I think it was the 4th of July

...ok, so it was Friday...and I guess it was the THIRD of July...good song tho, huh? Ange and I went down to Petco Park in San Diego for the Dodgers Game yesterday!
Highlight #1--Got to the park at 5pm and watch both Batting Practices!
Highlight #2--California Burrito at Lolita's across the street from the ball park. Heck with peanuts and crackerjack! (Please note that we did SPLIT this!)
I nearly wept, it was so amazing!
Highlight #3--Our sweet friend, Amy met us at Lolita's then we were off to the game!
Highlight #4--Oh, yeah...it just happened to be Manny's first night back too!! And the crowd was at LEAST 80% Dodger fans! Cheering...
Highlight #5--Dodgers WIN! And, of course, I was with two of the BIGGEST Padre fans around!
Actually, the whole day will truly be remembered as one big highlight in my life...SO much fun.

Hey Baby...It's the 4th of July

Heading to the San Diego "Zoo"

Heading down to San Diego and singing a little song...
Won't you sing it with me?
You know the tune.

Take me out to see Manny,
Can’t wait to be part of that crowd!
He’s paid his dues, now he’s back to play
Poor Juan Pierre on the bench he must stay!

“I’m baaaaaaaaaack” he says to the Dodgers
Still in first place—how we shine!!
The Suspension Fat Lady is singing today--
“Welcome back number 99!!!”

Thursday, July 2, 2009

Yeah Dave!

Absolutely MY kind of book...and LOVE the website too!

Isotope he's gonna be there!

The Fat Lady of Suspensions has begun her song...
It's over!!

Manny has served his time and, baring any unforeseen circumstances,
will re-join the Dodgers this Friday night in San Diego!
One thing IS sure:
I will be there!

A Rockie game for the Dodgers

Took my friend, Jeff, to the Dodgers/Rockies game last night.
His first time at Dodger Stadium!
Jeff is a HUGE Rockies fan...and, of course, left very happy!
They didn't win...it's a shame!
(But we had DAMN good seats again!)
No matter the outcome, there is NO PLACE I'd rather be! (I must admit, tho, it's a bit more fun when the Dodgers win.) Last night was my 14th game this season (#15 will be this Friday!) and, YES, I have a hot dog every single time! With ketchup and onions...
and an ice cold Corona!
My favorite meal. At my favorite place. Watching my favorite game.
I think this might just be as good as it gets!
