10 ways to live a longer and more ENJOYABLE life


  1. Exercise! According to the American Council on Exercise (ACE), regular exercise helps control blood pressure, body weight and cholesterol levels, and reduces the risks of hardening of the arteries, heart attack and stroke. Not to mention you will look and feel better!
  2. Get 7-8 hours of sleep a night! Not getting enough nightly rest puts you at risk for accidents, depression and other illnesses, and a decreased quality of life. Good sleeping habits spur creativity, sharpen attention and lower stress.
  3. Have sex! Kerry McCloskey, author of the Ultimate Sex Diet, says regular sexual activity strengthens the heart, is a natural pain killer, relieves stress and even boosts immunity! Sex also burns calories, helps you sleep better and ABSOLUTELY improves self esteem!
  4. Be positive! Aim to hear, feel, see, smell, and taste all of life's nuances. Look on the bright side! Make things happen! Develop a better attitude about living! Laugh, smile, go with the flow!
  5. Have good friendships! Have dinner and socialize with friends, and do other activities with your social support network.
  6. Drink wine! Yep, this makes ALL the top 10 lists on how to live longer. HOWEVER...it CLEARLY states that you are not to drink alone as it's not just the wine that causes you to live longer. It's the joy of sharing that wine, of laughing with friends, of relaxing and enjoying life WHILE drinking wine. (I get it!)
  7. Listen to music! Music can regulate mood, decrease aggression and depression, improve sleep, and, because old songs are stored in memory, even create new brain cells.
  8. Be adventurous--be playful! “Watching adventures on TV does not count as playing,"  says Ann Hodgman, author of 1003 Ways to Stay Young. Get out and have some real fun! Don't stop! Keep moving! Get up off the couch! Sitting fewer than three hours a day adds two years to your life expectancy, a recent study found. Plus you get more done--you feel useful and productive! Keep moving!
  9. Love yourself. Your mind, your body and your spirit; all three. Teach others how to treat you by treating yourself well. Take naps, read a book, take a bath. Remind yourself of how amazing you are. (And if you're not...become amazing!)
  10. Have a purpose! Keep working! Have a reason to get up in the morning! Know why you're here! Have a place to go and people in your life who LOVE and enjoy having you around! Having a sense of purpose--feeling useful and helpful and knowing that you make a difference--is the #1 way to add years to your life!
