I get by with a little help from my friends...

You know, it's nothing new
Bad news never has good timing
But then, the circle of your friends
Will defend the silver lining

Pain throws your heart to the ground
Love turns the whole thing around
No it won't all go the way it should
But I know the heart of life is good

I am SO addicted!

I've spent most of my last few evenings with Luke and Lorilei...
Amazing!!

Sing cleaning...

Today is the day! Mops, brooms, dust rags and sponges are ready to go. I've got Mr. Clean, Mr. Muscle and a Janitor in a drum. There's the clean smell of pine and that lemon fresh scent too...and OH the scrubbing bubbles! (They work hard so you don't have to!)
Yeah, ok, you get it.
But today, instead of whistling while I work, the iPod is raring to go with a newly-formed HOUSE CLEANING playlist!!
Yes! It's Spring Cleaning with a twist...SING cleaning!
Songs include "American Boy" by Estelle, "Walking on Sunshine" by Katrina and the Waves, "Save the last dance" by Micheal Buble, "End of the world as we know it" by REM, "Going on" by Gnarls Barkley, "All at Once" by the Fray, "Semi charmed Life" by Third Eye Blind, "Dancing with myself" by Billy Idol, "We didn't start the fire" by Billy Joel, and of course, "Mr. Brightside" by the Killers. (It is destined to become a workout playlist once this cleaning urge has subsided.)
And, YES, that is EXACTLY what I am wearing. Pearls and all.

Through thick and thin...

Kelly and I have been friends since Freshman year of high school. Our first babies were born three months apart. Our second babies were born three months apart. (Kelly went on to have a third...I never could keep up with her!) We have lived life together in OH so many ways since those days...and it has almost always involved food, beer, wine and lots more food!
But not anymore! Tonight, Kelly and I met at the gym and did our very first Pilates class together! Holy Cow...it's hard! (My stomach muscles are hurting as I SIT here typing!) It was SO fun to be next to Kelly during the class...and knew that it was ok if I couldn't keep up! We seriously laughed and sweated and tried to keep breathing and lost our balance and counted off the repetitions as we watched each other struggle. Kelly kept saying, "Am I skinny yet?"
At one point the teacher said, "There is a prize if you can do this part." Kelly yelled out, "Is it candy?" So fun...and it's seriously an amazing workout!
We're planning to go again on Tuesday.
(This photograph is just a special treat for everyone...found it when I googled "Pilates"...inspirational in SO many ways...)
As we left, worn out and sweating in our workout pants and baggy t-shirts--mascara running down our faces, Kelly said, "I know you're gonna blog about this, Jules. Thank you for not bringing your camera."
Maybe on Tuesday!

Hat breaker

Beautiful hat, huh?
I went to ALL FOUR of the post-season games at Dodger Stadium last year, but for some reason, I did not buy this hat. (I think that it was $30 and I thought that was ridiculous.)
2008 was the best Dodgers season of my life...I went to at least a dozen home games, traveled to see them play in San Francisco and San Diego and even planned my grandmother's funeral around the final NLDS playoff game. (Yes, really.) Did I mention that I sat three rows from the field at most of those games? Yeah...
And yet, I didn't buy the damn hat!

They are now impossible to find...
or are they...?
If you happen to come across one in your travels and/or online perusing, will you please let me know? There will be a reward.
I am on a mission.
And I would really like to have this hat.

Masters Decree

Tonight was the Master Awards Dinner at Montage...and OH what a night it was! As a special treat for me, Jaime, Chris, Joyce and Evette showed up in Dodgers tee shirts!! I was SO excited and SO honored!! They even brought one for me to wear!
It was an incredible evening...what a JOY to work with these people!
And...I love every minute of it! How lucky am I?!
With my beautiful daughter!

From the wine to the appetizers to the best fillet mignon and shrimp...everything was absolutely magnificent. The Master presentations were so great...honestly, the whole thing seemed like a dream--touching, hilarious--really unbelievable.
And, when the berry crisp dessert was brought out for the group, Allison and I were served warm Bananas Foster! It is my very favorite dessert!!!
I seriously smiled the whole time!

Actually, I'm still smiling.

Blog day afternoon...

I took this picture while away with some friends last year...it was a long weekend that included a whole lot of guacamole and just about as much tequila! I love the shot...it tells a great story.

I have a folder on my desktop where I store 'possible blog' ideas...of course, it's bursting at the seams. I thought I'd let a few out tonight. None of these things needs a story either.

So many things to LOVE...

Seems like the bloggers (writers?) of the world are posting their favorite things this week...
Here are some of the list of things I really love...
  1. I LOVE to laugh and really love making people laugh. (EACH of my kids' has a great out-loud laughter!)

  6. Someone who knows MUSIC
  7. Taking LOTS of pictures
  8. Sharing memories! (Remember when...?)
  9. Kissing.
  10. Concerts. Especially if I can sing all the songs...
  11. Going out to breakfast!
  12. A call from one of my kids
  13. COFFEE COFFEE COFFEE
  14. The full moon. Especially hanging over the ocean!
  15. My job. Every single day.

  37. An afternoon nap
  38. Packing a suitcase to go somewhere
  39. Surprises!
  40. Someone who makes my heart beat...

It really is, you know...

I've let too many little things ruffle my feathers
Weigh down my dreams
And I have wasted precious time
In the difference between a dollar and a dime
Kept my heart under wraps
And let my life slip through the cracks

Finally, it dawned on me,
This road's not as hard as it seems,
I'm taking the lows a whole lot better
All my edges fit together
Everyday feels like it should
Life is good

I'm learning to laugh at myself
Humble enough to ask for help
I'm willing to take a second look
Giving a chance and ready to close the book
I took what I used to know
And then I let it all go

Life is good
Life is good
Life is good

A beautiful day for a ballgame!!

Continuing our tradition, my Dad and I attended the Dodgers' Home Opener today! And WHAT a spectacular day it was! Vin Scully threw out the opening pitch and said from the mound, "It's time for Dodgers Baseball!"
Orlando Hudson became the second Los Angeles Dodgers player to hit for the cycle, Andre Ethier powered two homers and Chad Billingsley dominated with 11 strikeouts in seven innings to give the Dodgers an 11-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants.

We were able to meet up with Stephanie and Olivia too!

It's (finally) Opening Day

And, continuing our LONG TIME tradition, my dad and I are heading up to Dodger Stadium for the game!! Kinda strange to being going into Opening Day with a 4-3 record (and a game behind the Padres!)...but I am SO excited to be going! I'm DOUBLY thrilled that Randy Johnson is pitching for the Giants today. I have seen Randy pitch for Seattle, Arizona and New York...and now for San Francisco. At 6'10, and with a 100 mph fastball, he's BRILLIANT watch!
But that's not the only cool thing.
Randy is in his mid 40s (just like me)...and still kicking a**!
Just like me!!
He's also 5 wins away from 300...and I'll be rooting for him the rest of the year.
But definitely not today.
Go DODGERS!

Avenue Q

OH what a GREAT night...
My amazing friend, Chris, treated us to a performance of Avenue Q
at the Orange County Performing Arts Center!
It is tagged as "A Purpose-filled Musical"...
(Hmm, why does that sound so familiar?)The show has run on Broadway, in London and Las Vegas and has received multiple awards including the Tony for best musical. It is incredibly creative, thoroughly entertaining and even a little bit touching! And absolutely freaking hilarious.
We laughed out loud the whole time.
So much fun.
Thank you Chris!

Light up the halo...

Tonight Ange and I celebrated her birthday at the Angel's game!
We arrived early enough to watch Boston's BP and soak in the spectacular surroundings.
With a beer in one hand and a hot dog in the other,
Ange and I each agreed that there was no place we'd rather be...
Before the game began, the Angels showed a video honoring Nick Adenhart with clips from his pitching performance just two days prior, and Torii Hunter and John Lackey held Adenhart's jersey on the mound during a moment of silence. The team will wear a patch on their uniforms to honor Adenhart throughout the season.
And, as the finale to the touching tribute for Adenhart...
the Angels beat the Red Sox 6-3.

Nick Adenhart

I started this blog just about two years ago. My goal in writing each day was to prove to myself and to my friends and family that there was a lot of good in the world--and lots left to celebrate--despite the confusion, sadness, anger, frustration and ridiculousness of day to day living. Enjoying life and inspiring others to strive to do the same, has become the mainstay of these daily posts. "Encouraging optimism--one day at a time" is my objective and a love and appreciation for life is what I try to relay.
And you know that I love baseball. I have followed the game since I was a kid--attending games, following players and daily devouring box scores and standings. I love reading about players, memorizing team stats and club records and I RELISH explaining the infield fly rule. Besides all that I love the 'crack of the bat', the peanuts and crackerjack and the overall joyful feeling of a warm summer night at the ballpark. And I gotta say, being at that Dodgers game the night they swept the Cubs in the playoffs was one of the most memorable nights of my life.
But today finding joy seems kinda hard. Today, baseball, and the fact that the Dodgers lost yesterday, is pretty meaningless. I don't care who gave up those runs to lose the game. Today I am having a hard time being optimistic or even attempting to find something joyful to write about.
Life is not always good. And, no matter how much we try, there is no way to ever understand or explain or reason or figure out why things happen. You can be ON TOP OF THE WORLD one minute and have it all crumble and disappear the next. You can be full of passion and possibility and potential just hours before your life is tragically ended.
What? Why? How?
I am guilty of often saying that life is too long.
Today, I apologize.
If the news of Nick Adenhart's ridiculously timed demise does not prove that life is completely unpredictable, unbelievably fragile and--ultimately--extremely short...I don't know what does.
If nothing else today, please let it be a reminder to live life to the fullest...and to enjoy each day of your life...
it really is way too short.

Turn yourself around...

Put your right foot forward and your left hand back.
Now place your right hand back and your left foot forward.
Left foot up, right foot back….
Now shake it all out...

Are we doing the Hokey Pokey?

Nope…it's just my new favorite hobby—YOGA! Seriously, if you’ve ever been to a Yoga class—you get this. It is one intentional move after another. Holding the pose. Breathing in. Breathing out. You are reminded to “feel the invisible cable that is pulling your head to the sky…” while putting this hand here, that foot there...etc.

Yeah, and if you haven’t ever been to a class…let me tell you that it’s a whole new world. Bending, stretching, standing on one leg, arms up, down, up on your toes, and on and on...it's kinda like a very organized game of Twister!

Each time I go, I can't help but watch the ‘new’ people. It’s always someone’s first time. And there is always one who loses their balance…and another who falls over...But it doesn’t take long.

Two weeks into it and I am able to do most of the positions/poses in the class. I can’t always HOLD them for as long as the instructor asks, but I sure do try. She asks us to breathe. To clear our mind. To feel the peace and joy of life. And I do.

It feels so good. It really works. For me anyway. I run around all day at work. My mind doesn't stop. And I don't think I've relaxed since 1981.

But I do now. Three or four times a week anyway. I’m now venturing into the 90 minute class and I go early to just lay there in the dark silence before it starts. I stretch, I breath, I (attempt to) clear my mind and I remind myself of how good life is.

Then I put my right hand in…I put my right hand out…

Yeah…that’s what it’s all about.

PS This is what I am hoping to look like very soon!
I think the last time I wore a bikini was ALSO in 1981!

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim vs. Los Angeles Dodgers of Los Angeles

This is the first time in...YEARS!!...that I have not been at a freeway series game. For some reason, there is only ONE Angels/Dodgers pre-season game this year--and it's in (the real) Los Angeles. Just can't do that on a Thursday night.
BUT...it is televised! Yeah!!
So, I will be sitting right here tonight--at 7pm--when Vinnie says,
"It's time for Dodgers' Baseball!"
It's the most wonderful time of the year!!

Please sing with me (you know the tune!)

I'm staying home for the ballgame,
far away from the crowd,
I'll miss the peanuts and crackerjack,
but with Vin on TV--play by play I won't lack!

I will root root root for the Dodgers,
from my couch I will cheer--kinda lame!

Though there's no parking lot traffic to fight...
It just won't be the same!

But I gotta admit...I'll be in bed five minutes after it's over.

The curious case of Julie Ann Hibbard...

...and yet my mind won't stop.
Why do I feel so much younger than all my friends? Why do I have so much energy? Why do people tell me to calm down and tell me I'm too happy, too peppy, too hyper? No, my feet don't hurt. My back doesn't either. My eyes are fine. I feel amazing actually!! Better than ever. Heck, I weigh 40 pounds less than I did 10 years ago. What am I saying? I weigh 20 pounds less NOW than I did in 8th grade! Yeah, I feel good!
Why do I have more time than anyone else on earth? Why does time go by so much more slowly for me than for anyone else? Time does NOT fly and NO it does not seem like yesterday that my kids were little. I have enough time to get everything done. Everything.
I like getting up at 4am. I like working 7 days straight.
My house is clean. My laundry done. Drawers? Cabinets? Rafters? Clean. Clean. Clean.
I go to the gym in the afternoons now. That's good. Something productive to fill an hour and half.
But then what?
Since I got home from the gym I have showered, made dinner, read a stack of magazines, sorted mail, watched a baseball game and three episodes of the Gilmore Girls (SO good!) I finished a novel, started a new one, cleared out my hard drive, accepted friends #434 and #435 on Facebook and read every new post in cyberspace.
And it's 8:30.
Life is short? You have got to be kidding.
Yep. I'm all out of clever.
For tonight anyway...

April 1
