Remember TYFSAKM

I got home today around 5, took a bath and made the mistake of laying down on the couch. I woke up at 7:30. The weird thing is--I had the craziest dreams during this sleep! First I dreamed that I lived in a big brick mansion and Zac was there with his friends Ken and Dennis (I did not know them.) THEN, I dreamed of going to ZODY'S. ZODY'S was a store that my Nana used to take us to. I remember buying Hai-Karate for my dad for Christmas there.
I woke up very groggy, in the dark and then a TON of no longer-existent stores filled my mind. I don't know what made my brain go there...
Tell me you remember...
Two Guys
Big A
Gemco
Gilberts
T G & Y
Fazios
Lucky
Alpha Beta
Clothestime
Kinney's Shoes
Thrifty Drugs
Thriftymart
K Mart (our favorite place to eat too! Tacos on Tuesday night!!)
Woolworth's
Bullock's
Broadway
Buffums
Builder's Emporium
National Lumber
Montgomery Ward
Newberry's
Whitefront
Akron
Fedco
Boston Stores
Please tell me you know what this post's title means.
Seriously...I don't even need to do drugs.

And the Dodgers will be going to...

Chicago.
...my kind of razzmatazz
and it has, all that jazz...
...yeah and, apparently, it's one town that won't let you down...
I'm counting on it.
Life is Good!
Just a few of the reasons I am especially happy today...- I slept SO well last night! It's GREAT to NOT have to set the clock or get up early! It was one of the best night's sleep I've had in a long time.
- I got on the scale this morning and am down a full SIX pounds since getting back from Kenya! (Chipati is a wonderland, but it's a killer on the waistline!)
- The Sunday Times was waiting on my doorstep when I got up! And...the Sports page is FULL of baseball!
- I went on my 'tougher' two mile walk (lots of hills!) and felt great the whole time! It is beautiful outside.
- Though it's for our Grandmother's funeral, this Thursday, four of the five DiLallo sisters will be together. Looking forward to that a lot!
- The Dodgers start their postseason games this Wednesday. (I like that line!) I have tickets for Saturday and Sunday's games. (Damn, life is good.)
- I talked on the phone to my son AND my daughter this week!!
- I am going to a wedding today where SO many old friends will be! (And I got a sexy new dress to wear...)
- My house is clean. My laundry is done, I am watching the Mets game and literally relaxing!
- Though my stocks are down and my money is all in WaMu, I'm healthy and I'm happy! And, honestly, I don't think I've ever felt better about life.

Baseball Prospects

So...I have (GREAT) tickets to game three and game four (if the Dodgers don't sweep of course) of the NLDS playoffs at Dodgers Stadium. We know where...we know when. The only thing we DON'T know is WHO they will be playing--the Cubs or the Phillies. We SHOULD know tomorrow and game one will be on Wednesday.Just a little random fact to add to the suspense of the upcoming games: The Dodgers have won just ONE postseason game since 1988. Yeah. One.
I'm feeling really good about the Dodgers this year. What with all the Padres Diamondbacks and Astros fans that have been recruited lately--seems like the whole country is gonna ROOT ROOT ROOT for the Dodgers! Are YOU on board? Go BLUE!

You can call me Betty...

I've made quite a few batches of chocolate chip cookies lately...
And it has been a JOY to whip them up in my beautiful new mixer!
Seriously, the cookies have been SO good--the best I have ever made.
Perfectly blended. Absolutely delicious.
And made with love.

Congratulations Dodgers!!

The NL West Division Champs!
Way to go Dodgers!!!
I am taking this opportunity to invite all of my
Diamondback-loving relatives to jump on board and
ROOT ROOT ROOT for the Dodgers!!

My Nana

Though we truly thought it could never really happen,my Nana passed away last night.
She would have been 95 on October 15th.
I am actually amazed at how sad I feel...I know she had had a long, full life...I know that 95 is a fabulous, 'ripe' old age to live to! But to know that she is gone--that I can't stop by and visit anymore--is truly odd.
I no longer have grandparents.
And the Dodgers' Magic Number is...

STING lyrics
Allison gave me this book for my birthday last year. Or maybe it was for Christmas, I can't remember.I have read it over several times, though it's hard to read without starting to sing the songs. I have to make myself READ it, usually out loud...and it's touching.
I love Sting. Having first seen him with the Police in 1980, and then AT LEAST 15 more times over the many years (that I could count), I kinda feel like Sting and I grew up together. Heck, I've known him for nearly 30 years.
The other night, a friend asked me what my favorite Sting song was. I guess I feel like that's a personal question really. Sting and I have had similar situations in our lives, especially our love lives, though Sting has found his soul mate, and I still search for mine. I know we've experienced a lot of the same joys and similar pain. But Sting has the enviable talent of being able to articulate those thoughts and craft them into songs that have communicated to--and totally entertained--multiple generations of people. Oh, and he's made a handsome living doing so.
I just blog about my thoughts and feelings...
I love Roxanne. And Message in a Bottle. Aah, the old ones.
I love Fragile and Driven to Tears.
I love You Still Touch Me and I'm so Happy I Can't Stop Crying.
And then there is When we Dance. I can't say that it's my favorite, but it brings the most thoughts and memories and seriously, touches me deeply. Listen to the words of that one sometime. Yes, I've been there.
And, there are a few lines that always stand out for me in certain Sting songs:
*It takes a man to suffer ignorance and smile...
*Let your soul guide you upon your way...He'll guide you well...
*Something made me smile, something seemed to ease the pain, something about the universe and how we're all connected...
*I dream of love as time runs through my hand...(THAT LINE GETS ME!)
and
* De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da
Heck, real Sting lovers even get that one.
Yep...sometimes, there are no words.

Damn, I HEART baseball
As the 'E's start showing up in the standings I must confess that I hold on even tighter to each and every wonderful day left in the season. I just watched the Dodgers win again (magic number is 8) and was thinking of how much I really love this game...every single bit of it!What exactly do I love?? Here are just a few things...
1. I love being among the first to arrive at the stadium. (Last week I was there before the parking lot opened!) I LOVE LOVE LOVE to be there for batting practice. And I SO enjoy getting a hot dog and a beer and a bag of peanuts and watching the stadium as it slowly fills up...
2. I love that I remember watching the game with my dad when Hank Aaron hit 715! (I was only 9--but it was against the Dodgers!) And I still think Kirk Gibson's 'bottom of the 9th, 2 out pinch hit home run' in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series is MY greatest moment in baseball. And, if you can name the pitchers in both of these memorable events--I would like to marry you.
3. I love that it's a brand new ballgame at the beginning of every season. Everyone is tied for first on Opening Day. And there are no 'E's in sight.
4. I love that I have been to every baseball stadium in California. And the Diamondbacks' Chase Field too. And, that I have been to Yankees Stadium twice. (Many more to come!)
5. I so enjoy finding someone who 'speaks' baseball. I swear that it's my love language.
6. I love that the Dodgers won the World Series the year I was born...and the year I graduated high school. It's fate.
7. I freaking love Vin Scully. I love the way he talks so kindly about the players--even guys on the opposing team. I love that he is still turned on by a great pitch or incredible play. I love the memory of listening to Vin on the old black transistor radio in the garage with my dad--back in the day.
8. I love that I have met Steve Garvey, Tommy John, Don Sutton, Rod Carew and Greg Maddux.
9. I love a REAL pennant race. Give me a 'down to the wire' season over a '17 game lead' season any time. Sorry. Wait. No I'm not.
10. Oh...a perfectly beautiful squeeze!!!
11. I love singing 'Take Me out to the Ballgame." Seriously, I don't care if I ever get back.
12. I love Field of Dreams. And Sandlot. Yeah, Bull Durham too.
13. I cry when I see footage of Sandy Koufax. And Don Drysdale. And Kirk Gibson's homerun. (Sue me!)
14. I LOVE wearing my Dodgers jersey. And my Dodger t-shirts. And my beautiful fitted Dodger cap.
15. I love reading the box scores and standings every single day!
And there is SO much more to love!!!
Oh, but when those dang 'E's start showing up...ugh!
Hold on tight baseball lovers!
The Dodgers are serving up baseball at its VERY BEST right now!!!
No 'E' in sight.
And I am going to enjoy every last second of it!

Time with my personal trainer
I finally got a personal trainer.Yep. I meet "Gio" every Monday morning at the Apple Store for my hour long "One to One" personal training session. Even though I have always had a Mac, my new laptop has been a little overwhelming to me--there are so many applications that I have never even used! I really want to get the most out of my new computer and Apple's personal training sessions are the best thing going. Knowing I have someone waiting for me, keeping me accountable--gets me up and out of the house and I am now on the road to personal fitness. Well, personal computer fitness!
My trainer, Gio, is awesome and brilliant! I am so envious of his knowledge!! (And he's a Dodgers fan to boot!) Just two sessions and I am already feeling great and looking better! I know that soon I will be in GREAT SHAPE with the help of this Apple Genius.
Last week Gio helped me 'migrate' all my information from my old computer to my new one--not a small feat! Today he helped me set up my external hard drive as my 'time machine' and went over basic organization in iTunes and iPhoto. That's when he gave me my homework assignment. Before I go back next week I have to get rid of all the photos I no longer need (I have over 10,000 pictures) and I have to delete all the duplicate songs I have in iTunes. For some reason, there are a lot.
So...I am going to go get my sweats on...I'm in for quite a workout.

Thoughts to those who are (a little) younger...
One of the GREAT benefits of being (a little) older is the incredible perspective that seems to come with each added year. You've heard people say 'If I knew then what I know now...'Well I know (a little) more now.
Here's (a little) Julie Hibbard wisdom for you...
1. You're gonna live through it. You may want to lay down and die. But you probably won't die. Get up, dust yourself off, and go back to living. Seriously. I don't necessarily believe that whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger, but you will start to know how very much you are able to endure and you will grow to learn that pain, however inevitable, is not fatal.
2. It's the things that you DON'T DO that you will regret. A trip you should have taken, the day you could have called in sick to see your team clinch the division. The concert you didn't want to pay 100 bucks for. THOSE DAYS don't come back folks! LIVE a little. No, live A LOT! Truly think about what you will remember 5 or 10 years from now. And, when choosing between doing something you can do anytime OR a once in a lifetime chance--that should be a no-brainer. I was not in the senior class play--I was asked to be the lead! I didn't want to be away from my boyfriend all those nights for practice. Honestly, I have regretted it for 25 years.
3. Don't stay home and wait for his phone call. I understand that with cell phones these days you don't actually stay home and wait. But you are waiting, huh? Please trust me on this: Do not make someone your priority when he has made you his option.
4. Expectations are planned disappointments. Go with the flow and open yourself up to the possibilities that lie ahead. Be curious about the future! And ENJOY THE HAPPY ALONG THE WAY. This is something that has literally taken me a lifetime to realize. You are allowed--and ENCOURAGED!--to enjoy the moment. You don't have to plan everything.
5. The choices you make between ages 18-24 will have life-long consequences--good or bad. Choose wisely! Listen to your friends! Ask lots of questions! Don't be afraid to back out or say no or change your mind! Honestly, while walking down the aisle on my wedding day, I wanted to run the other way. I was 18. I often wonder how different my life would have been had I done so. Life long consequences from a decision I made as a teenager.

6. Finish school. Travel. Try all 31 flavors! You will never meet anyone who wishes they hadn't graduated college. Or seen the Eiffel Tower. Or tried Pralines and Cream or Cherries Garcia! You know my story--I graduated from college a week after my 37th birthday. I am STILL proud of myself for that one. I have seen the Eiffel Tower a few times now. Takes my breath away every time. And, well, I've tried all 31 flavors--and many others--with 31 different toppings, whipped cream, cherries, nuts...you name it! and I've loved every second of it!
7. Love people. Relationships (especially with your family) are truly the only things that matter in the end. Who would you call in the middle of the night when your car breaks down? Hopefully you can name a few people quickly. If not, start loving on people. And have someone in your life who you can call if you end up in jail...someone who will save the lecture for a later time.

8. Making other people happy is the only way to really be happy. Remember people's names. Their kids names. Their dog's name. Their birthday. Their favorite vodka. I promise you that life is so great when you know and love and have deep friendships. It's what gets you up off the floor, into the shower and back into life. Often, literally.
9. Life is long. It goes by slowly. Which means you have LOTS of time to better yourself and better the world. My real advice? Turn off the TV. (Well, unless it's a Dodger game of course) and go out and LIVE life. Take a class, take a hike (no, a real one) take a friend to dinner, take a break from your normal routine and spice up your life a little! I tell ya, it CAN be enjoyed every single day!
10. Have a job you love. Find that job. Keep it. If you love your job, life will be easier. It's that simple. I have always loved my job (all three of them!) and have always found JOY in being at work. If you LOVE where you spend that 1/3 of your life...the other 2/3 will be more enjoyable as well. I promise.
Smile! Laugh! Have fun! Life is good!
Enjoy it every step of the way.
I am.

These are the best days of my life...
I don't know if I can accurately describe the JOY I am feeling today. Life is so dang good and there is a pleasant surprise waiting around every corner!
This is my friend, David. He invited me (and a whole lot of other baseball lovers) to come on this fabulous Dodger getaway! Seriously, it's been an amazing couple of days.
David and Emily put together the 'field trip' (pun intended!) to Petco. The meals, the rooms, the after parties...all arranged by these great people. And OH what fun it has been!!
David even mixed up the drinks for us!I tried a drink with 'Effen' vodka in it.
It was Effen delicious.
Yes, this is Russell Martin. Wow!!I also met Ned Coletti, Greg Maddux, Scott Proctor--among others!--
and spent the evening with a whole lot of GREAT baseball fans!
Seriously, one of the best nights of my life. Seriously.
Thank you David!
Thank you David!

Yankee Dawdle
An absolutely GORGEOUS night at Angel Stadium. We had amazing (cushioned!) seats and our own waiter! 'James' brought us beer, sushi, more beer and strawberry shortcake! SO good! And, for tonight's game...

Tonight's game is probably the LEAST anticipated Angels/Yankees match up of all time. The Angels are in first place--by 17 games--and looking to clinch by the end of the week. Their magic number is 3. (Yawn)
I WOULD like to take this opportunity to thank the Yankees for Joe Torre though! Yes! Thank you!! He's certainly been working his magic for the Dodgers these days.
As for tonight, well, I may buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jack...but I DO care if I ever get back...
I'm going to see the Dodgers tomorrow.

Summer Lovin' in Greece
I am seriously considering an 18-day tour of Greece as my 2009 Summer Adventure. The trip is put together by the same guide who toured my group on the fabulous three-week European vacation I enjoyed in 2006.He was the European History teacher at Saddleback College for 33 years so, like the last trip, it would be highly educational.
The last week is spent on a cruise of the Greek Isles and into Turkey. So I know it would be enjoyable and amazing as well.
The group experience has always made it really easy for me and keeps the cost way down too.
I'd love your thoughts on Greece!

Sarah Smile
OK...here's my opinion...A woman--no matter HOW smart, HOW educated, HOW funny and quick witted--who has five children--including a 17 year old pregnant daughter (PLEASE DON'T LET HER GET MARRIED!!) and an infant with special needs...does NOT have time to be the vice president of the United States.
I am not even saying that she is not qualified.
I'm just saying--as a woman who has TWO children--between being team mom and room mom and getting kids to two different schools and making sure they did their homework and running them to karate and dance and little league and church events and orthodontist appointments and making sure they were emotionally cared for...I was barely able to squeeze in part time work as a waitress!!
God forbid something happen to the 70-plus year old McCain...
Would she be able to run the country?
At what cost to her family?
Just my thoughts...

Chick Flick
I don't think ANYTHING bugs me as much as when I tell someone that I like a movie and they say, "Chick Flick." I truly believe this a rude comment, meant to be derogatory...and, bottom line, I guess I am never quite sure why it is said. Is it meant to put me down (and 'chicks' in general) or the movie? Why do you feel the need to 'rate' a movie as such? And, what constitutes a movie being a "chick flick" anyway?I had this conversation a couple of months ago while attempting to loan a movie to a friend who, by the way, is not a chick. Among the STACK of movies that he was happy to have me loan him was the (brilliant) Academy Award winning film, Once.
As he sifted through all the DVDs he grabbed Once and handed it back to me. "Chick Flick" he said without even looking up. I threw a highly-defensive remark right back at him--along with the DVD. "Are you kidding me?" I added.
He said, "Look at this cover...boy and girl walking together toward the sunset...Chick Flick."
I'm telling you truly--NOTHING irritates me more than this.
I asked him what makes a 'chick flick' AND, even more importantly, why he is unable to watch such a film, even on a recommendation from me--someone who knows him and thinks he might really enjoy it.
He said, "A chick flick is made to appeal to woman. It's heavy on the relational and emotional side...it's a movie where you're left crying at the end. You know, like 'Beaches.'"
Really? I told him that I'd never seen Beaches in its entirety, but that I have cried in hell of a lot of movies.
I, in fact, cry at some point during MOST movies (ask my kids.) Heck, I bawled in "Shawshank Redemption", "Million Dollar Baby" and, most recently, (and for the third time) while watching "Crash." He stopped me to say that he had cried in "Crash" too.
OK. But it's not a chick flick...right? Deeply emotional as well as relational, but you'd never call it Chick Flick for sure!
He said, "OK...a Chick Flick is a movie where people live happily ever after...chicks go nuts for that kind of stuff!" I tell ya, I about threw a shoe. I hated the conversation. But I am stubborn as a freakin' ox. I don't give up easily.
I made him take the movie. I assured him that it was not romantic, he probably wouldn't cry and if it encouraged him to watch the movie, I would swear that nobody in the film lives happily ever after.
He took it. And he had it, along with five or six of my other recommended DVDs, for the last couple of months.
Yesterday I had a voice mail from him on my phone. "Hey, I couldn't sleep last night, so I popped in Once. Oh my gosh Julie! What a good movie! I love the guys voice and his songs and I really like the non-traditional ending! It was really good."
Wow. I called him back and he could not stop 'gushing' over the film and its brilliance. He even told me that he had downloaded the music and couldn't wait to purchase the movie for himself.
And, he suggested that the movie cover be changed so that it didn't look like a chick flick.
I very kindly suggested that perhaps he change his attitude about movies in general and not judge a book by its cover. I went on to say that--as far as I was concerned--having deep emotions is a human trait, not a female one. I added that having a good relationship is not just the stuff of fiction and fairy tales...we all desire this...women and men.
A good movie that touches your heart or stirs your soul or encourages your hope for love and relationship should not be delegated--or negatively judged--as belonging to just one half of our population. I believe those who quickly dismiss a movie, calling it 'chick flick' are missing out on some very good films.
Or, perhaps, they are just sitting alone in a dark room at night with a Kleenex box realizing that they are deeply moved by an emotionally touching movie...
It's OK guys. You won't be judged.
In fact...we like you like that.

Bienvenue Monsieur Gagne
A gift from a friend who knows me well.
He will be well loved and cared for and will feel at home here with his fellow Dodger Bobble Heads Mr. Garvey, Mr. Cey and Cesar Izturis.
Seriously, you couldn't give me a diamond ring and have me love it as much!!
I think it's a sign...
GO BLUE!
